The Seven Great Hermetic Principles

The principles of truth are seven; He who knows these, understandingly, possesses the magic key before whose touch all the doors of the temple fly open.

The Seven Great Hermetic Principles Are These

  • MENTALISM: The All is mind; The universe is mental
  • The Principle Of Correspondance : As above, so below, as below, so above
  • The Principle of Vibration: Nothing rests, everthing moves, everything has vibration
  • The Principle of Polarity: Everything is duel; Everything has poles; Everything has its set of opposits; Like and unlike are the same; Opposites are indentical in nature, but differnt in degree; Extreams meet; All truths are but half truths; All paridoxes may be reconciled
  • The Principle of Gender: Gender is in everything; everything has it; Masculine and Feminine principles; Gender manifests on all planes
  • The Principleof Rythem: Everything flows in and out; Everything has its tides; All things rise and fall; THe pendulum swing manifests in everything; The mesure of the swing to the left is the mesure to the swing to the right; Rythem compansates
  • The Principle of Cause and Effect: Every cause has its effect; Every effect has its cause; Everything happenes according to law; Chance is but a name for Law unrecognised; There are many planes of causation but nothing esscapes the Law

The Seven Great Hermetic Principles Are These
Mentalism The First Principle

Anyone who has dabbled in quantum mechanics knows this one, there is nothing out there that wasn’t inside you first. This knowledge has been known for thousands of years, that our conscious mind creates our reality. Everything in the universe is created by thought or mind, and nothing that exists in the material universe exists outside of thought and mind.

Buddha had a very strong understanding of the power of the mind. He understood that what you think about you become.

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

Even the Hebrew Bible says this,

As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he

Book of Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7

When we understand our thoughts shape our reality, and learn to master this principle it is the beginning of knowledge of the workings of the cosmos. We can not think negatively and expect positive results. Thoughts become words, words become actions, and we create that which we think about most. Some may be familiar with “the Law of Attraction”, but this law was known way before the authors of the book printed the first page.

Mind is the Master power that moulds and makes,
And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes
The tool of Thought, and, shaping what he wills,
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills: —
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass:
Environment is but his looking-glass.

James Allen, 1903

Our perceptions are based purely on emotions, let go of these emotions, change your perceptions and change your reality. Stop judging every moment based on your traumas and past experiences because nothing will ever change unless you change your thoughts first. Or stay where you are right now and your mind will keep creating the universe you have always known.

The Principle Of Correspondance

As Above, So Below Second Principle
As Above, So Below Second Principle

This law means that the inner thoughts and images that we hold in our conscious and subconscious minds will manifest their mirror likeness in our outer happenings. You most likely see this law as an appendix to the first law of mentalism. But it goes further than just the intentions of our thoughts in mentalism and outright states that those thoughts and images you hold will create themselves in the physical world.

Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Matthew 18:18 ESV

The world we live in is a mirror of our inner worlds. If we believe in our minds that we are victims we will be victimized. If we see in our minds racism, we will also see racism everywhere we go. If we imagine ourselves unworthy, so will those in the outside world. What we create in the aether, or our minds will be on earth as it is in heaven/aether/consciousness.

For example, one day when I was 19, I was walking from my sister’s house into town several miles away. I had in my mind suddenly an image of a coin. It was a coin used for tossing, on the head side was the bust of a female, and on the tails side was the rear, bottom view of a female. I had had a coin like this several years before when I lived in a different city. I began thinking of every detail of that coin, imagined holding it, feeling its weight, looking at its polished brass while I was walking into town. Then, right at the edge of town while I was walking thinking about this coin, looking down at the ground as I walked, there it was, the coin laying right before me. Many have suggested that perhaps I had seen the coin before but was not aware of it, but that my subconscious saw it and was now leaking through to my consciousness. This is a reasonable assumption, but I had never walked into town before, I only walked this day because my motorcycle was in the shop for repairs. But this is the power of manifestation of thought, as I recreated that coin in the aether, it had to manifest itself in the real world.

The thoughts and images we hold in our minds will attract their physical likeness to us in our external circumstances. This law works unceasingly for the good or the bad. By understanding this law we can use it for our benefit instead of our detriment. As we progress and practice this second law, the time of manifestation will get shorter and shorter, and you should be happy about that, think about the average person if they were able to manifest things instantly the results could be very bad if they have not mastered their minds, their negative thoughts could have died consequences for themselves and others around them. But as we progress and become more mindful and master our thoughts, vibrations or thoughts will also manifest quicker.

The Principle of Vibration

Vibrations ~ Nothing rests; Everything moves; Everything vibrates.
Vibrations ~ Nothing rests; Everything moves; Everything vibrates.

This principle governs the difference between the manifestation of matter and that of spirit. Everything is vibrational, from pure spirit to mundane matter is fluid, every particle and every molecule is vibrating in a certain motion, speed, vibration, and frequency. Every vibration and combination of vibration determines the form, be it physical or metaphysical in nature. When we see a rock, we tend to see it as a stable material object, but the rock is in motion, its elements are vibrating and what we perceive as solid dense matter is mostly empty space sparsely populated with elements vibrating at a particular frequency, the same is true in our bodies, the solar system, and the entire universe, nothing rest everything is in motion. You also have infinite smallness in infinite greatness, and the universe is like one big atom and a microcosm of the macrocosm.

If we change the frequency of something we change its nature as well as form, we take something and transform it into something else just by our thoughts. We can do this in our bodies as well as the body is a mirror of the universe. Within every atom of our body are a miniature universe and every thought we have about ourselves affects our feelings, emotions, and even our health, and what we attract to ourselves because energy follows thought. The ideal is to create a motion that is determined by your Higher Self, rather than by the lower self, or negative ego. Each of the seven initiations is a higher level of vibration and motion.

The Principle of Polarity

Everything is dual; Everything has poles; Everything has its pair of opposites; Like and unlike are the same; Opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; Extremes meet; All truths, are but half-truths; All paradoxes may be reconciled.
Everything is dual; Everything has poles; Everything has its pair of opposites; Like and unlike are the same; Opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; Extremes meet; All truths, are but half-truths; All paradoxes may be reconciled.

This principle is exactly what it sounds like, but is not to be confused with duality. For example, people think of hot and cold as two separate things when they are in fact the same separated by degrees of separation. In other words, Cold is not something in itself, it is the absence of a measurable amount of heat. Hot and cold therefore are two extremes or poles of the same thing. The same is true with spirit and matter, they are connected and just two poles of the same thing, the lower vibrations, and frequencies to one end manifests physical matter, while on the opposite end spirit is manifested. If you take water, for example, remove enough heat and it becomes ice (matter), add heat to it and it boils and becomes gas or steam (spirit), they are still equal in its nature, still H2O but in two separate states of being.

This same principle applies to all pairs of opposites, light and dark, large and small, hard and soft, positive and negative. They are not different but just two sides of the same property, just as one battery has two poles, everything in nature is duel, but not as a duality that is, something that is opposite and separated from the other. Good is not separate from evil, they are just degrees of the same thing, like hot and cold. and likewise, physical matter and spirit are not separate things, they are just two ends of the same pole.

The same thing applies to our mental and emotional states, hate and love are often seen as two different things when again they are the same thing differentiated by degrees. So this principle of vibrations has great power when applied, it gives us the power of transmutation, to change one end of the vibrational spectrum to its extreme, or anywhere along the scale. changing the motion or direction of the pin as it were. In reality, this is the practice of alchemy.

We transform with our thoughts hate into love, separation into oneness, darkness into light, our physical body into a body of light, and our lower self into our higher self, by learning and practicing this principle, we begin to change the world around us, we begin to change our physical mundane thinking into higher spiritual thinking. This principle is more valuable than it appears and is more powerful than you can imagine until you continue to realize the transformative power we all truly have.

The Principle of Rhythm

Everything flows, out and in; Everything has its tides; All things rise and fall; The pendulum swing manifests in everything; The measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; Rhythm compensates.
Everything flows, out and in; Everything has its tides; All things rise and fall; The pendulum swing manifests in everything; The measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; Rhythm compensates.

This law is inescapable, what rises will also fall, what goes up comes down. We see this manifestation in everything in its receptacle rhythm, life, death, and rebirth. Without decay, there could be no regeneration, we can see this even in the rise and fall of nations, the need for sleep after a day of wakefulness. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction.

Take note of your breathing, you breathe in creation and breath out creation, the rhythm never stops but can be slowed or even changed, but never halted. The Hermeticists cannot cancel or cause this principle to cease operation, however, they have learned to escape its effects upon themselves to a certain degree. The degree to which this is obtained depends upon one’s application of this law and one’s level of initiation at later stages.

You must learn to use this law instead of merely being used by it. By understanding the previous law of polarization we can polarize ourselves or arrest the pendulum swing and slow down or change the rhythm in our moods, and mental states by the use of our will and detachment to create a state of consciousness that is not swung backward or forward like a pendulum, and by doing this we attain a state of consciousness of divine indifference, evenmindedness, equanimity, and inner peace.

This is best described by Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, which is the same teaching of the Hermetists. The idea is to stay even-minded, whether you have profit or loss, pleasure or pain, sickness or health, victory or defeat, rejection or praise.

This is just a matter of where you polarize your mind and state of consciousness. There is a point of neutrality or objectivity or divine detachment, that is not caught up in the pendulum swing between these rhythms and polarities.

This is the christ or god consciousness, this is the state where the physical body and your higher self or spirit become entangled as one being, often described as a being of light. Joy is determined by your attitude and the polarization of your mind, all suffering comes from one’s attachments also wrong points of view.

The Principle of Cause and Effect

Every cause has its effect; Every effect has its cause; Everything happens according to law’ Chance is but a name for law not recognized’ There are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.
Every cause has its effect; Every effect has its cause; Everything happens according to law’ Chance is but a name for law not recognized’ There are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.

We must become the cause instead of the effect, the average person on the street is not a cause but they live as victims of effect, their emotions and their reality are affected by a cause. There are no accidents or coincidences in the universe, only synchronicities, and a cause, everything in the universe is governed by laws and these are constants. Sometimes we don understand the cause, this is because there are seven dimensions of reality that the causation can occur from. So the cause doesn’t have to happen in this plane of reality for the effect to manifest on this or any other plane of reality.

As I stated, most people are victims of cause, they are an effect and victim of thoughts, moods, emotions, desire, appetites, lower self, other people, biorhythms, the physical body, past lives, subconscious programming, heredity, the weather, astrological influences, vital forces, disincarnate spirits, glamour, Maya, illusion, and the environment, to name a few. The master rises above and has a great deal of mastery over these things the higher one evolves.

The key is to gain mastery over your mind body and emotions and be aware of the thoughts and images we hold in our consciousness. Your thinking must be the slave of your spirit, not the other way around.

In summary, be the cause, be the master, be the co-creator with God that you truly are, and then you are using this law and principle instead of allowing it to use you. If you are not a master, you are the victim. This is the law of polarity. Change your polarization with the power of the mind and the power of your God-given free choice.

The Principle of Gender

This is bound to trigger some people, but hear me out. On the physical plane, each person has a male or female physical body, however psychologically each person is androgenous with male and female qualities. This can be expressed also as Yin and Yang.

Balancing the male and female aspects within self and also balancing the heavenly and earthly aspects within self. The spiritual path is also the balancing of the three minds, the four bodies, and the seven chakras. It is also the proper balance between the soul and the ego. This is done by transcending the negative ego, and hence, keeping the ego in its proper balance and relationship to the soul, which is to let it take care of the physical body, but not interpret your life.

This can be some up with the words, “KNOW THYSELF”, and to know oneself is to know and understand the laws that govern our universe, and the mind of God, that is to understand that we are not god, but a mirror reflection of him. To become balanced with our right side and left side, our right brain and left brain, that being our masculinity and our feminine sides we become a whole person. When we became sentient beings our two sides were cut in half and separated. The word we translate as rib in the book of genesis is better interpreted as “side”. We have been divided, torn in two, and the clinging of male and female to form one flesh is an internal struggle to dominate one’s self. By mastering these laws or principles, one learns mastery over their minds and bodies, and can ascend into higher states of consciousness.

In Conclusion

I’m sure many of you were expecting me to give you some insight into the workings of practical hermetic magik, but I ask haven’t I done just that? To be a magician, doesn’t one need the tools to do his craft? Many complain that their great works do not work out at all, that the rituals and ceremonies don’t produce the results they had hoped for and even promised. The rituals and ceremonies are not the problems, nor are they truly the key to doing great works, the problem has always been the lack of teaching the primers. One doesn’t skip basic math and jump into calculus. The fact is in many groups, the master only selects a few to actually pass down this information to, and leaves the rest to find out for themselves as his time is short.

Although this is probably not what you wanted to learn in reading this, this is the most important key you will ever be given to understanding the seven principles of hermeticism. The mastery over self and the seen world comes before the mastery of the unseen realms. Thank you be bless and congratulations on your journey.
